We all know that practicing yoga is a great way to stay fit, and wearing the right gear can help you feel more confident. However, washing your leggings, sports bras, and other activewear correctly can significantly extend their lifespan. After testing a few methods, I found these 4 simple tips that can help keep your leggings looking better and longer.
1. Wash Your Leggings Before the First Wear
It’s a good idea to wash your leggings before you wear them for the first time. New activewear often has residual dyes and chemicals that could transfer onto your skin or irritate it during exercise.
Gently washing them in cool water and allowing them to air dry can help set the color and stabilize the fabric. This also helps prevent the dye from fading onto your skin as you work out.
2. Hand Wash for Best Results
For regular cleaning, it’s best to hand wash your yoga clothes in cold water (no warmer than 86°F / 30°C). Hand washing is gentler on the fabric and helps maintain its elasticity. If you need to machine wash, be sure to avoid mixing leggings with towels, jeans, or cotton items. To minimize wear and tear, turn your leggings inside out before washing to prevent snagging.
3. Avoid Dryers and Irons
Activewear is usually made of a blend of nylon and spandex, which are comfortable and stretchy, but sensitive to heat. High temperatures from dryers or irons can damage the fabric, compromising its elasticity and altering the fit over time. Always air dry your leggings, and avoid ironing them. Check the care label on your garments for specific instructions to prolong their life.
